'LIVE' Review: Planet Rock - Ravenna, Italy - 18th February 2011

Sometimes even the most seemingly ordinary evening can turn into a source of good ideas.

It is true that the Tygers Of Pan Tang have appeared quite frequently in our country in recent years (the last occasion was in September at the Rock Hard Festival), and it is true that the Planet Rock, based in a maritime town which in winter gets quite sleepy and incredibly cool, does not always give optimal acoustics and, the stage is very small. But it is worth reviewing these NWOBHM giants because they know that their name is synonymous with quality.

The nasty surprise that is waiting for the layman is that Robb Weir, guitarist and founder of the Tygers Of Pan Tang, was forced to stay in England having gone into hospital the day before (nothing too serious thankfully, a problem of kidney stones). What to do? Evidently, the remaining members were consulted, and eventually decided not to cancel the date, and perform just this once as a four piece. All this is explained by Jacopo Meille after their opening two songs, and here's the most important lesson of the evening: the memory and love that sometimes the public has for the music prevails over all other considerations.

The Tygers Of Pan Tang still sounds good, also stimulated by an indisputable consensus of the public, perhaps giving even more energy to their tracks for an unexpected audience who may have otherwise been thrown into turmoil and a bit less convinced of their ideas. Well, the celebration of the thirtieth anniversary of the publication of 'Spellbound', is duly noted with the release of an EP titled 'The Spellbound Sessions', and T-shirt celebrating the single 'Hellbound', and it seems that the values of the audience has the upper hand this time. Fortunately the unexpected is temporary, and hopefully we can expect the full roar of the British tiger soon in Italy."
