Jack Meille speaks with Deaf Forever Magazines Martin Brandt (Germany) The band's great classics are still the eighties albums "Wild Cat", "Spellbound", "Crazy Nights" and "The Cage", but in recent years the TYGERS OF PAN TANG and their Italian singer Jacopo " Jack "Meille also released some very good works which now serve as the basis for a new compilation called" Majors & Minors ". The following interview was not conducted with band leader Robb Weir (g.), but with front man Jack. To be completely honest, the necessity of your new compilation "Majors & Minors" does not really appear to me. Most of the songs included are from the last four TYGERS albums. all of which are still available. For example, `Ambush 'was just re-released last year ... "..and 'Animal Instinct" will be released again this year. There are two reasons for this release: Due to the corona pandemic, we cannot tour at the moment, and our label thought the compilation is a good reason to promote the band a bit again while we have to sit at home. I also celebrate the last 13 years of TYGERS history with this release with all the albums that Craig Ellis (dr.) and I can be heard on. After Robb we have both been members of the TYGERS OF PAN TANG for the longest time. " Who chose the songs for "Majors & Minors" and what criteria were used? "It was teamwork by Robb, Craig and me. First, Robb suggested the title of the album, and that inspired us to not just look for the singles or the songs we play live, but also a few favourites that come as a surprise " Why is the album actually called "Majors & Minors"? Sounds to me, "Minors" are a bit derogatory ... "On the one hand there are major chords and minor chords in music and on the other hand the title should indicate that it not only contains the hits, but also songs that we all like very much but haven't really made it into the limelight yet. For example, 'Let it Burn' from 'Animal Instinct' is a favourite song by Robb and me, but we've never played it live before. 'What You Say' was just the B- Side of the "Only the Brave" single, but we would have loved to have put it on the album.

In addition to 'What You Say', "Majors & Minors" also contains the B-side of the 'Never Give In' with 'Plug Me In', which is also not on your self-titled album. Why did you leave out the two pieces back then?
"Our label pointed out that not all tracks would fit on the vinyl release, and because we wanted to release the album with the same songs on vinyl and on CD, we had to leave two out and only have them used as single B-sides. Many fans asked us if the pieces would ever be released on CD and we have now made up for that"


With 'Majors & Minors' there are now serious differences between the CD and the vinyl version. While the CD has 15 songs, the LP only has ten. Wouldn't a double LP have been the best solution?
"We had hoped to be able to release the album as a double LP, but unfortunately that was not possible. It was a difficult decision to leave out some songs. We also wanted to release an exclusive piece on vinyl, which will then be a live version of 'Keeping Me Alive'. "


Is that the same live version that was already re-released as a bonus track on the 'Ambush'?
"No, it's not, the bonus song from 'Ambush' is from 2012, while the new live version was recorded in 2016, when Micky Crystal played the lead guitar"


"Our songs would sound great with an orchestra."


On 'Majors & Minors' you can also find the 'Ritual' song "Spoils of War", the orchestral mix. Do you like this version better than the original?
"It's just a different version. While recording 'Ritual' Craig Ellis had the idea to provide "Spoils of War" with this orchestration. He brought in his friend Richard Chance to help with this arrangement. In the end, this version couldn't convince all band members, so we released a different mix on 'Ritual'. But we knew that the orchestral version was something very special - maybe it's a little pompous, but because we liked it, we took the chance to release it on 'Majors & Minors'."


There are some hard rock / metal bands that have released orchestral albums in the course of their careers. Would you be interested in doing something like that with the Tygres?
"Definitely. I was allowed to play a few Led-Zeppelin songs with an orchestra in my hometown of Florence. And that's one of the best memories of my life. I think some TYGERS songs would sound great with an orchestra "


Since the beginning of 2020, live concerts or festivals can no longer take place due to the pandemic. Did you use the time to write new songs?
"We write songs like never before. Robb produces fantastic riffs like on the assembly line, and it turns out that our new guitarist Francesco is also a great songwriter. The chemistry in the band has never been better and I can't wait to see it. to present the new pieces to the fans In 2021 a maxi single with two new songs will be released, and we hope that the next full studio album will be out in early 2020. "


You are talking about the fact that you had to replace your guitarist Micky Crystal with your compatriot Francesco Marras in 2020. Have you ever been able to play live with Francesco?
"First of all I would like to congratulate Micky and his wife Sarah on the birth of their daughter Mya Marie. It was very difficult when Micky left the band, but Francesco is just the perfect replacement. We tried out some talented guitarists, but he not only got us literally blown away, but was also the only one who was recommended to us by several friends. Unfortunately, we haven't been able to perform with him yet, but we are currently creating incredible music together "


I hope the three British TYGERS members learned a little Italian too ...
"Yes, you must if you want to understand what Francesco and I are talking about, hahaha!"


Does Brexit actually have any effect on a band like the TYGERS OF PAN TANG, which consists of three British and two Italians?
"I do believe that we will feel the effects of Brexit, at the moment that was not the case because of the pandemic. We will just have to wait and see ..."
